Why Hire a Coach

Professionals such as athletes and musicians have traditionally hired coaches because they are committed to excellence. Business people and individuals are now hiring coaches because they are also committed to excellence. They aren't satisfied with mediocre results in their careers or personal lives. They want the best life has to offer.

Possible Benefits of Coaching

I don't promise that my clients are going to experience all of these benefits, but these are the kinds of benefits that people often experience from coaching. Some of these benefits may seem "pie in the sky" but they are possible. Coaching is not a magic bullet that will deliver these benefits. You have to work for these outcomes. A coach can help you be strategic and focused, achieve outcomes more quickly, and enjoy the process more fully.

  • Making a difference for your loved ones and for the world
  • Growing your business to new levels of success
  • Making more money
  • Doing work you love and enjoying it immensely
  • Being more peaceful, centered, aligned with your values, committed, excited, alive, inspired, inspiring, happy, fulfilled, attractive, magnetic, loving, and compassionate
  • Dating or enjoying your partner with more joy and grace than you thought possible
  • Having relationships that work and that are deeply satisfying
  • Having goals that bring you alive and practical plans to achieve them
  • Having enough of the things that really matter to you such as: money, fun, joy, time, love and connection
  • Playing bigger games, games that really matter and bring out the best in you, games that require you to leave behind old patterns of playing small and selling out on yourself
  • Creating results that boggle the mind they are so awesome
  • Working less (but smarter) and still getting more results
  • Celebrating more
  • Taking vacations that are truly fulfilling
  • Doing nothing and loving it (guilt free!)
  • Doing more of what really matters

Comments on the Effectiveness of Coaching

"People who use a career coach find jobs 15% to 46% faster than those who don't, according to a study by talent management firm Lee Hecht Harrison."
- WALL STREET JOURNAL, 1/27/09, page D4

"If you are inspired, you don't need motivation."
- Thomas Leonard

"Business Coaching is attracting America's top CEO's because, put simply, business coaching works. In fact, when asked for a conservative estimate of the monetary payoff from the coaching they got...managers described an average return of more than $100,000, or about six times what the coaching had cost their companies."
- FORTUNE, 2/19/01

"A coach may be the guardian angel you need to rev up your career"
- MONEY Magazine

"Across corporate America, coaching sessions at many companies have become as routine for executives as budget forecasts and quota meetings."
- INVESTORS BUSINESS DAILY

"Coaches are not for the meek. They're for people who value unambiguous feedback. All coaches have one thing in common, it's that they are ruthlessly results-oriented."
- FAST COMPANY Magazine

"I absolutely believe that people, unless coached, never reach their full potential"
- Bob Nardelli, CEO, Home Depot

"I never cease to be amazed at the power of the coaching process to draw out the skills or talent that was previously hidden within an individual, and which invariably finds a way to solve a problem previously thought unsolvable."
- John Russell, Managing Director, Harley-Davidson Europe Ltd.

"I've had a therapist since I was 14, and now I have a coach. Things are changing in the therapy world, and there's a big coach movement now. I don't know how people can live life without a coach. We need more support in this culture. I'll give you an example. Let's say that I have a part of me that I'm afraid of, let's say I'm afraid of being weak. As a kid, I thought that being weak was terrifying, so I've spent the rest of my adult life trying to be strong all the time. But now I'm compulsively trying to be strong, to the point where it's to the extreme. And while there's a gift in that, I'm not really "integrated," because the integrated place would be to be okay with being weak sometimes, okay with being strong sometimes, and having a choice as to which one I use at any given moment."
- Alanis Morissette, Rock/Pop Star

So you want to learn how to ride a bicycle?

You could hire a therapist, consultant, trainer, mentor. . . or you could hire a coach.
  • The therapist would encourage you to talk about your fear of riding a bicycle.
  • The consultant would explain to you how it is done.
  • The trainer would present what others have done to be successful, complete with role-play and assisting you through visualizing yourself on the bicycle.
  • The mentor would get on and show you how.
  • The COACH, however, would encourage you to hop on the bike, and then would run alongside you until you were steady enough to go on your own.
